Google now allows you to buy trademarks as keywords

By vishalsood - Posted on 19 April 2008

Yesterday, I was reading an article in Financial Times. Google is now allowing anyone to buy trademarks are ad keywords.

So now, I could very easily show my ad against a competitor's search. E.g., Nissan motors could now bid for keyword Toyota and show their Ads when one searches for Toyota. This means if I have to save my keyword, I need to pay more.

This is a move that could allow Google to make more money as people bid for these keywords. Is is really good for the business in general? We can debate. I feel it is just another money making thing for google. Earlier, Google would not make any money from trademark auctions so this is a new new thing. Industry will surely hate it as they probably have to pay up for what came free so far.

It is a smart move on Google's part. I am a capitalist in my thinking and this to me is an opportunistic move by Google.
